Abacus Math Program

Beginning in the 2011–2012 school year, Ari's Academy is offering additional math curriculum taught by Ms. Lakshmi. Ms. Lakshmi specializes in using the Soroban (Japanese) Abacus to teach math fundamentals and mental math skills—knowing that the more skill your child has at using their brain to mentally address and solve problems, the more successful they will be.

After years of research, it is clear that very few early education school subjects or programs are
geared toward teaching children to use their whole brain to solve problems, particularly in math.
Learning to use the abacus teaches even very young children how to handle mental math counting and
simple calculations.

We are excited about our opportunity to add this math class to our program, and confident that not only will the students be learning—they will be having fun doing it!

Why use the Soroban Abacus?

Soroban perfectly fits with the decimal system of calculation. It naturally ends to moving from calculating on Soroban to calculating without Soroban by visualizing Soroban in the mind. This also promotes right brain development. Logic and calculation are left brain functions. Thus by choosing Soroban, we are able to accomplish whole brain development.

What are the positive effects of learning to use the Soroban Abacus at an early age?

Improved:

  • Concentration
  • Visualization
  • Memorization
  • Insight
  • Information processing
  • Speed
What age would it be beneficial to start using an abacus?

As soon as a child is able to begin to understand the concept of “numbers”, as early as 3 and a half years to 4 years of age. Most students begin to learn the abacus between preschool and into kindergarten.

What do we already know about young children who learn to use the abacus?

Evidence shows that those who have taken the abacus math classes consistently have improved
comprehension in math, better & faster counting and calculating skills, clearer logic and reasoning, are more attentive to instructions, have keener listening skills, a sharper memory, improved confidence and self-esteem and better, faster calculation skills.

Does this class have an additional fee along with my students regular tuition?
